The goal of Knowing God is to know what pleases Him, and also what displeases our Father in order that we may love Him more deeply and serve Him more gladly. Regardless of our religious heritage, God is the Creator of all. He is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. Who are we to question what God does, or why He may choose to allow us to suffer the consequences of our choices. He is the great I AM, and His ways are not our ways. He is the holy One that holds us in His mighty hands. The truth magnifies the grace of God. The truth scales down our problems. Grace torches our human concept of God’s purpose in His lavish issuance of mercy and patience with a fumbling, faithless people. The work of grace covers all our needs, without our help. Our complaining, discomfort and discontent with who we are, or what we have is a catastrophic hindrance to knowing, and accepting God the Father for ALL that He is. God tells us that He is Spirit, that He is Love, that He is eternal, and that He is just. His Word declares that by His grace, we are saved. We are not saved by our knowledge of God, or by our rituals, our prayers, or our good deeds. “Come to Me, all you who are weary.” Come and discover the truth expanded!

“Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves Me will obey My teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.  Anyone who does not love Me will not obey My teaching. These words you hear are not My own; they belong to the Father who sent Me.  “All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; My peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. “You heard Me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’ If you loved Me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe.” John 14:23-29  The Father, Son, Holy Spirit together make up the great Godhead.

A theologian gave a great definition to the question of the ages. “What is God?” Charles Hodge wrote “God is Spirit, infinite, eternal, and unchangeable, in His being, wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness, and truth.” Grace is God expressing a spontaneous, undeserved, Self-determined kindness towards us. The grace of God so overwhelmed a few that songs were written to magnify the sweeping magnitude of His gesture of benevolence. Faith in the grace of God is to trust that whatever good moves into our lives, comes from the Father. In Matthew 25:31 we are told “The Son of Man…will sit on His throne in heavenly glory.” Jesus Himself will be the Father’s agent in man’s final judgement. The Son of Man picked us up out of the pit of sin, where the first Son Adam left us. Paul prays “I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.” Ephesians 3:16-19 The doctrine of the trinity is mysterious and therefore it has been questioned. Jesus comforted His disciples that a new Comforter was coming. Jesus tells us that He is the Spirit of truth.  “If you love Me, keep My commands. And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you know Him, for He lives with you and will be in you.  I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Before long, the world will not see Me anymore, but you will see Me. (that is prophetic as we will see Him and meet Him in the clouds.) Because I live, you also will live. On that day you will realize that I am in My Father, and you are in Me, and I am in you.” John 13:15-20 

“What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us.” 1 Corin 2:12 Our Father’s promise to never leave us is the truth! As we journey along to know God more intimately, more personally, He is well pleased.  “you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” 1 Corin 6:11 We must examine our heart to determine our true motive for the study of who God is. “The very greatness of the subject matter will intoxicate the student” J.I. Packer. We must be careful NOT to think more of ourselves. “Our aim in studying the Godhead must be to know God Himself better. Our concern must be to enlarge our acquaintance, not simply with the doctrine of God’s attributes, but with a living God whose attributes they are. As He is the subject of our study, and the Helper in it, so He must Himself be the end of it. We must seek, in studying God, to be led to God.  It was for this purpose that revelation was given, and it is to this use we must apply it.”  J.I. Packer  Paul told the conceited Corinthians “Knowledge puffs up”. 1 Corin 8:1-2.  We need to guard our hearts against a superior attitude with regards to our knowledge of God.  “Give me discernment that I may understand Your statutes.” Psalm 119 Pastor Louie Giglio has a passion for astronomy and as he ponders the glory and majesty of God, Louie shares photo’s from NASA in order to justly consider how BIG our GOD is, and how small we are, and yet our Father knows all the billions of stars by name, just as He knows each person’s name on earth. “When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that You care for them?” Psalm 8:2-4

“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”  1 Corinthians 6:17-18

Themes in “Knowing God”.  1) God has spoken to man. 2) God is Lord and King over His world; He rules all things for His own glory. 3) God is Saviour, active in sovereign love through the Lord Jesus Christ to rescue believers from the guilt and power of sin, to adopt them as His children and to bless them accordingly. 4) Within the Godhead, three persons act together.  A)The Father forever purposing redemption. B) The Son Jesus secures our redemption. C) The Holy Spirit teaches and guides the new creation in Christ as He applies wisdom to those who surrender to Him. 5) Godliness means responding to God’s revelation in trust and obedience, faith and worship, prayer and praise, submission and service. Our life must be lived in the Light of God’s Word.

The Godhead and His qualities of Deity are His Self-existence, His infinity, His eternity, His holiness, His love, mercy, truthfulness, faithfulness, goodness, patience, and His justice. We meditate, or call to mind, think over, and dwell on the Word of God in order to apply it to ourselves. This conscious holy thought process clear’s one’s mental and spiritual vision of God as it ever humbles us as we contemplate His greatness, and His plan to use us. As our knowledge of God increases, our peace, strength and joy also increases as we draw closer to our Creator, our King, our Father, the Holy One. January 7, 1855 CH Spurgeon, age 20 preached “The highest science, the loftiest speculation is to ponder who our Father is. There is nothing that humbles and expands the soul more than pondering the Godhead.”
