Grim was the world, dark and grey. The moon and stars were fled,
The hall was dark,
without song or light,
The fires were fallen dead.
The wind in the trees
was like to the sea,
And over the mountains’ teeth, a whistled bitter-cold set free. A word, like a sword leapt from its sheath.
The Lord of the weather
raised his wise head;
His mantle was long and pale, the bitter blast from His mouth spread.
Snow hung o’er hill and dale.

The world was blind,
the boughs were bent,
All ways and paths were wild: The veil of cloud apart was torn, and here was born a Child. The ancient dome of heaven sheer. The dark was pricked with distant light; A star came shining white and clear, alone above the night.
In the dale of dark in that hour of birth, one voice suddenly sang: All the bells in Heaven and Earth at midnight rang.

The baby cried and Mary sang out below: Angels heard her song arise.
O’er mist and over mountain snow, up to the walls of Paradise.
The tongue of many
bells was stirred…
Heaven’s tower ringing
A voice was singing,
a mortal maid was heard,
it twas the mother
of Heaven’s King.
Glad is the world
and fair this night
With stars about its head,
The hall is filled with
laughter and light,
And fires are burning red.
The bells of Paradise now rung with the bells of Christendom. Glory Alleluia, the faithful sing, that God on earth is come.

by J.R.R. Tolkien, written in 1936 to bless your holy Christmas Eve ever year. Such poetry, like the Psalms, a great blessing that warms the heart and touches the soul. The grace of God touched the earth at the moment of the Messiah’s astonishing birth. Holy is this night, a time of worship. Merry Christmas to all who bring Jesus joy as you remember His came down from heaven for your personal eternal soul.

Tolkien wrote another delightful Christmas poem titled “A Christmas Carol.” In this poem, he captures the spirit of the holiday season with a whimsical and heartfelt tone, emphasizing themes of joy, wonder, and the magic of Christmas.
Tolkien and C.S. Lewis were indeed contemporaries and friends, both involved in the literary group known as the Inklings, which met regularly to discuss their works and share ideas. Their friendship greatly influenced both authors’ writings. They both penned themes that included a bit of mythology to draw people into the deep abiding joy that comed with faith in Jesus Christ, Lord of all.

Merry Christmas
