My sister Mary did the ancestry research and discovered that our bloodline includes the hearty people of Norway, German, Irish, and a scant of American Indian. I was named after my mother’s mother Barbara Herzig. In 1979 I traveled to Germany to meet my mother and she took me to her childhood village in the Eiffel mountains of Germany to her hometown of Shuen Ecken. My grandmother Barbara was taken care of by her neighbor Lilly. When we arrived we shared coffee and cake and Lilly gave me the family heirloom. The bed warmer that was passed down through the generations. Traditionally once received as a wedding gift, you pass it along to your daughter. Well I only had a son, so I passed it along to Diana, my bridesmaid, who has a daughter named Katie.
